Support for Beekeeping Management
Sustainability Report 2023
As announced in our 2023 Sustainability Report, we have initiated a project aimed at some form of compensation for the unavoidable emissions generated by our activities which, while involving the provision of a service, still have an environmental impact that we want to mitigate as much as possible.
We chose a small and virtuous agricultural reality located in our territory. The choice fell on "La Temperanza," which operates in the province of Imperia. We had several meetings with Massimo Tarocchi, the owner of the company, to present our reality and the project we wanted to implement and to understand what his needs might be and how we could support him.
Once the modalities were decided, the project started with the purchase of beehives and families to be an active support for beekeeping management, which is the project's aim. The preservation of ecosystems is fundamental for sustainable agriculture and the conservation of life on Earth, and bees play an essential role. In fact, about a third of our food depends on the relentless work of these small insects, not only for the production of honey but also for the indispensable work of pollination.
As Albert Einstein said, "If the bee disappears from the Earth, man would have no more than four years to live." Nothing could be truer; if bees disappeared, the consequences on world food production would be devastating, as many plants would not be pollinated and could no longer spread, grow, and thrive. There are certainly artificial pollination methods, but they are very slow, labor-intensive, and can be used over rather small areas. Moreover, they are very costly, while the pollination service offered by bees is free, covers fairly large regions, and keeps biodiversity constant.
We should take an example from this small, industrious, organized, and above all, altruistic insect... "sic vos non vobis"...
Matras and Matras Foods will also support La Temperanza by ensuring the purchase of a good part of their strictly organic honey production to accompany our beekeeper throughout the product's life cycle and ensure continuity for his "families."
Farm "La Temperanza" by Massimo Tarocchi
The farm "La Temperanza" by Massimo Tarocchi is a sole proprietorship established in 2018 following a significant life change. Massimo, the owner, decided to fulfill his dream of living in close contact with nature, leaving his career as an engineer at a large firm in Turin to devote himself full-time to farming in Ceriana, an ancient village in the inland area of Sanremo and Taggia, his wife's hometown.
In addition to cultivating the family's century-old olive trees, Massimo ventured into the wonderful and complex world of beekeeping. He transformed an old, abandoned vineyard, which had been entirely renaturalized into a forest of chestnuts, heather, and Mediterranean scrub, into an apiary.
A convinced advocate of biodiversity conservation, Massimo decided to make a small but tangible contribution to the protection of the Black Bee of Western Liguria (Apis Mellifera Mellifera), an indigenous species of the area still present but threatened by the breeding of more productive species that are originally foreign to this far end of Liguria. This life project was named after the tarot card symbolizing change and the quest for one's inner balance in complete harmony with nature.
